The Naito Museum of Pharmaceutical Science and Industry was designated as a Heritage of Industrial Modernization by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) in February 2009.
The process of industrial modernization in Japan between the late Edo period and the early Showa period (around 1850-1930) is highly significant. It laid the foundation of Japan’s modern manufacturing sector and became the root of Japan's key industries today. Against this backdrop, the METI certifies buildings, machinery and documents that contributed to the industrial modernization of Japan as Heritages of Industrial Modernization with the aim to gain a wide understanding of the historical technical and industrial values related to Japan’s modernization and to utilize these objects in invigorating local communities.
The Naito Museum of Pharmaceutical Science and Industry was certified as one of the METI’s “heritage constellations of industrial modernization that tell of predecessor entrepreneurship blooming into the advancement of the chemical industry.” Specifically, historical documents related to pharmaceutics stored at the museum were the objects of certification.
